Liberal Democrat statement on the 22 Reform councillors, supported by the 9 Conservative councillors, taking control of Warwickshire County Council today.
Warwickshire Liberal Democrats will hold Reform UK and the Conservatives to account.
Liberal Democrats have raised their concerns that Warwickshire County Council does not have a Cabinet operating with Portfolio Holders leading the Council’s directorates and business areas.
The results of this month’s County Council elections were announced on 2nd May. But, more than three weeks later, no Councillors have yet been appointed as Portfolio Holders by the Leader of the Council.
This absence of leadership comes at a particularly crucial time for the Council. Inspections by the Care Quality Commission of the Council’s Adult Social Care services and by Ofsted of the Council’s Children and Young People’s services are due in the next few weeks. These two areas are two of the most important services provided to residents in Warwickshire. The last full inspection by Ofsted was more than three years ago.
One of the key questions the inspection teams will rightly ask is around leadership at the Council. But at this critical point in time there are no Portfolio Holders in place and no date for when the Council Leader will make a decision on the Cabinet appointments.
This isn’t the change that residents were promised. It’s a vacuum, and it’s not fair to residents nor staff that there’s no leadership in place
Cllr Jerry Roodhouse, leader of the 14 Liberal Democrat councillors at Warwickshire County Council.
